In: SEVEN INTERNATIONAL MULTIDISCIPLINARY CONGRESS, 3rd, June 1-2, 2023, Online. Proceedings... São José dos Pinhais, PR: Home Publishing Brazil, 2023. DOI: 10.56238/sevenIIImulti2023-195

Abstract: X-rays produced by electron ionization provide an analytical tool that can assist investigations in the field of Artistic and Cultural Heritage. In this study, the technique of Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXF) was employed to investigate collections of postcards from the 1960s produced in Brazil, London and Uruguay. The collections belong to private collections and were made available for analysis at the Radiation Spectroscopy and Spectrometry Laboratory of the Institute for Nuclear and Energy Research (IPEN). This technique is non-destructive and allows the identification of chemical elements present in the different chemical formulations used in the printing industries of each country in the process of preparing postcards. This information allows tracing their origin and identifying copies/fakes, which enables their cataloging and registration for exhibition, as well as providing subsidies for conservators and restorers regarding the preservation and storage of these artistic materials.

In: INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON OPTICAL MEMS AND NANOPHOTONICS; SBFOTON INTERNATIONAL OPTICS AND PHOTONICS CONFERENCE, July 31 - August 3, 2023, Campinas, SP. Proceedings... Piscataway, NJ, USA: IEEE, 2023. DOI: 10.1109/OMN/SBFOTONIOPC58971.2023.10230914

Abstract: We present a simple ionization model to assess the density of plasmas created in air by ionization induced by the electric field of ultrashort laser pulses. It calculates the average ionization induced by the laser taking into account the known threshold intensities for each ionic state, the beam spatial profile and the atmospheric composition, estimating the plasma density. The model density predictions are compared to experimental results obtained by a time-resolved Mach-Zehnder-like interferometer, and are also used as entry parameters to evaluate the plasma temperature by the Saha equation.

Abstract: Thyroid disorders are a complex group of diseases that require an accurate diagnosis for effective treatment. Fine-needle aspiration biopsies can assist in detecting many thyroid diseases. These materials can be analyzed visually using traditional computer vision methods, despite the limitations of complex samples. To address this problem, we propose a novel approach that uses hyperspectral imaging (HSI) to analyze thyroid biological samples. HSI measures the absorbance of infrared light by biological samples using a micro Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (micro-FTIR) and converts this data into hyperspectral images. In this study, we used HSI to train and validate a recurrent neural network to classify thyroid samples as healthy, cancerous, or goiter. Our experiments, based on the k-fold cross-validation, achieved an overall accuracy of 96.88%, a sensitivity of 96.87%, and a specificity of 98.45%. These results demonstrate the potential of hyperspectral imaging as a tool to assist pathologists in the diagnosis of thyroid disease.

In: SIMPOSIO INTERNACIONAL SOBRE EDUCACIÓN, CAPACITACIÓN, DIFUSIÓN Y GESTIÓN DEL CONOCIMIENTO NUCLEAR, 3rd, July 26-29, 2022, Santiago, Chile. Proceedings... 2022.

In: SIMPOSIO INTERNACIONAL SOBRE EDUCACIÓN, CAPACITACIÓN, DIFUSIÓN Y GESTIÓN DEL CONOCIMIENTO NUCLEAR, 3rd, July 26-29, 2022, Santiago, Chile. Proceedings... 2022.

Abstract: Medical radiology has social and academic relevance because it is a specialty that uses different types of radiation for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. It requires a multidisciplinary team that is attentive to the changing guidelines imposed by the government. The rules are presented and enforced by the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) and the State and Municipal Health Surveillance (VISA). Currently, the ANVISA standard that regulates radiodiagnostic clinics is Collegiate Board Resolution 330 (RDC) and Normative Instructions (INs) 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96 and 97, which dictate the rules of operation of the clinic in general and each equipment in particular. In this work, we evaluated the implementation of this new resolution, through a qualitative study, with the following procedures: interviews, analysis, comparison of results, and direct observation in 05 magnetic resonance centers of the private hospital network of the metropolitan region of Fortaleza. A question that the work intends to try to answer: Given the data collected, what will be the possible initial, medium and long-term impacts of the implementation of these Ins.

Abstract: Studies on residual stress effect in resistance spot welding (RSW) have not been widely explored for the new ultra-high strength steels (UHSS), such as, press-hardened steel (PHS) used for the automotive industry application. The number of PHS parts has been widely increasing in the vehicle structure, due to its ultra-high tensile strength achieved after the hot stamping process, which can reach 1500 MPa. This outstanding steel properties is function of steel grade and is a guaranty for lightweight and safety. Weldability is one of major issues to allow the large product application in the automotive industry however, the numbers of papers and works with focus on PHS weldability is still small. The residual stresses in spot welded joints play an important role in affecting the durability of the joint. It is well known that the residual stresses may reduce the mechanical properties of the welding joint and contribute to hydrogen embrittlement effect. This paper has undertaken an experimental survey of residual stress on 22MnB5 - PHS steel, using X-ray diffraction technique, before any heat treatment, i.e., without hot stamping, with variation of the main welding parameters. In general, it was found that the residual stress results showed a great influence of the resistance spot welding parameters. The residual stress measures showed levels up to 300 MPa in PHS material, which can impair the material usage.

Abstract: The effects of phototherapy on herpes lesions have been clinically demonstrated by either preventing the lesion formation or speeding their repair. The aim of this in vitro study was analyze the effect of phototherapy on epithelial cells and HSV-1 in culture. Cultures of HSV-1 and epithelial cells (Vero cell line) were used. The irradiations were done using a GaAlAs laser (660 e 780 nm, 4.0 mm2). One, two and three irradiations with 6 h-intervals were done. The experimental groups were: Control: non-irradiated; 660 nm and 3 J/cm2 (2.8 sec); 660 nm and 5 J/cm2 (3.8 sec); 780 nm and 3 J/cm2 (1.9 sec), and 780 nm and 5 J/cm2 (2.5 sec). The HSV-1 cytopatic effect and the cell viability of irradiated cultures and controls were analyzed in four different conditions: irradiation of non-infected epithelial cells; epithelial cells irradiated prior infection; virus irradiated prior infection; irradiation of HSV infected cells. The mitochondrial activity and cytopathic effects were assessed. The number of irradiations influenced the cell growth positively and proportionally, except for the 660 nm/ 3 J/cm2 group. Any variation in cytopathic effects was observed amongst the experimental groups. The viability of infected cells prior irradiation was significantly higher than that of non-irradiated cultures when 2 irradiations were done. Under the experimental conditions of this study we concluded that phototherapy is capable of enhancing epithelial cell growth and prolonging cell viability of HSV-1 infected cells. Positive benefits of phototherapy could be resultant from prolongation of infected cells viability, corroborating with host defenses.

Abstract: A low cost PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) was developed for characterization, visualization and quantification of a flow test section. Optical devices are common nowadays in metrology, in fluid-flow measurement and studies of flow around structural models or industrial facilities in wind tunnels. The advantages of the optic devices are high resolution, precision, fast response time and, most important, it is not intrusive. The PIV system developed is composed by a quasi-continuous laser-diode with nominal power up to 100 W, monochromatic at 800 nm wave length. An orthogonal lens set defines the width and thickness of the light screen in the test section. Image acquisition is made by a CCD camera. Acquisition and processing image software was developed in C++ and Matlab. The flow field velocities are determined by processing successive images using cross correlation. Analysis of fluid flow around 1 and 2 cylinders, in parallel, were conducted. The tests were conducted in water seeded with micro-spheres with 30 μm mean diameter. The analysis were conducted with velocities of the order of 0.15 m/s, the optical window dimensions was about 100 mm x 150 mm. The results show that the PIV prototype is working even though further development is necessary.

Abstract: Sporotrichosis is a neglected disease occurring worldwide, described as an occupational risk disease, affecting farmers, gardeners, and agricultural workers. Patents have territorial restrictions, being valid only in countries that have granted a patent license, which allows their free reproduction in countries where protection has not been extended. The use of tools that extract, organize, analyze and allow the targeted selection of interest documents can contribute to solution of problems in technologically less developed countries. This study aims to analyze the main patents related to diagnosis of sporotrichosis on Espacenet, a patent base with more than 120 million documents, seeking to select free documents for exploitation, with low cost of reproduction, and that can be used to at least minimize problems related to sporotrichosis. Patent2net, an open-source patent collector, was used to search in Espacenet, a database with more than 120 million of patents, documents that will be freely applied in Brazil. We identify a Taiwanese patent related to a kit for rapid detection of Sporothrix infection, that can be freely manufactured Brazil and other underdeveloped countries. The technometric analysis performed with P2N can be replicated by any interested in search of technological solutions for numerous problems, especially in poor countries.

Abstract: The loss of the services provided by ecosystems affects the well-being of people and compromises development in its multiple dimensions. In megacities, the promotion of human well-being and the conservation and restoration of ecosystems and their services are urgent global challenges, especially as a function of the growing expansion of water scarcity and its tendency to worsen due to the effects of climate change. This article addresses the growing use and application of nuclear science and technology for the conservation, assessment, and restoration of ecosystems and their services. It focus on water security and climate change, and on how this contributes to the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Tools based on nuclear science provide solutions for the development of "climate-smart" agricultural methods; the study of terrestrial, aquatic and atmospheric systems; monitoring how climate change affects the environment and GHG routes, and their distribution and impact on ecosystems, among other aspects. Nuclear technologies are used for wastewater treatment, identification of pollution sources, studies on the quality and quantity of water resources, and adaptation to climate change. The demystification of nuclear science and technology and the increase in collaboration between the ecosystem services and nuclear areas, and society as a whole, are fundamental for facing the global challenges related to water and climate in large cities.

Abstract: The green belt surrounding São Paulo and Santos metropolises, designated by UNESCO as the São Paulo City Green Belt Biosphere Reserve - GBBR (1994), encompasses a population of 25,4 million people in a region responsible for nearly 20% of Brazilian GDP. With approximately 2,33 million hectares, the biosphere reserve and its inner urban area (220 thousand hectares) are host to expressive terrestrial and marine biodiversity, typical to the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes. This paper presents the biosphere reserve as a water security territory: it provides around 90% and 100% of the water flows supplying São Paulo and Santos metropolises, respectively. Representing only 7,36% of São Paulo State territory, the GBBR harbors over 70% of the state´s volume for public supply. Spatial analysis shows that most of this volume comes from a few protected areas that act as hydric hotspots. During 2013-2015 Southeastern Brazil and especially São Paulo faced a severe shortage in rainfall that posed threats to the metropolitan water supply, leading to important reflections about the region´s hydric vulnerability. Combining classical built infrastructure with ecological infrastructure (conservation, restoration and sustainable use of its ecosystems) is paramount to ensure the populationʼs water security in the medium and long terms. In this sense, the geographical and conceptual frameworks constituted by the GBBR can provide integrated land management solutions for improving water supply in quantity and quality for such a complex and critical territory.

Abstract: Climate change and urbanization are the biggest challenges to be faced by humanity. Between 1950 and 2005, global carbon emissions from fossil fuel burning increased by almost 500% while the level of urbanization increased from 29% to 49%. Urban growth is one of the main factors that cause the increase of natural habitat loss on the planet, which affects the capacity of ecosystems to meet the vital needs of millions of people, including the growing number of international migrants, who are strongly directed to urban areas. Considering the trend of intensification of the effects of climate change, this study assesses the interdependence between urbanization, climate vulnerability and environmental displacement in the megacities of the world, based on the simulation of sea level rise in megacities. Although climate change is a global issue, it is also a local concern, since urban areas play a crucial role in the climate change scenario. As migration policies and urbanization are considered separately, megacities are spaces of high vulnerability, notably given the effects of climate change, and demand the development of coordinated responses to tackle them.

Zacatecas, Mexico: Sociedad Mexicana de Irradiacion y Dosimetria, 2022. p. 145-170.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to investigate the luminescent properties of CaSO4:Mn synthesized by slow evaporation route. The crystalline structure, morphology, thermal and optical properties of the phosphors were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), photoluminescence (PL) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Moreover, using thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques, the dosimetric properties of the phosphors, such as emission spectra, glow curve reproducibility, dose-response linearity, fading of the luminescent signal, variation of the TL intensity with the heating rate, OSL decay curves, correlation between TL and OSL emissions and minimum detectable dose (MDD) were comprehensively investigated. For dosimetric analyses, the samples were irradiated with doses from 169 mGy to 10 Gy. The emission band fits with the characteristic line of the Mn2+ emission features, ascribed to 6A1→4T1 transition. CaSO4:Mn pellets present a TL glow curve with a single typical peak centered around 494 nm, an OSL decay curve with predominance of a fast decay component, and a MDD on the order of hundreds of mGy. The luminescent signals showed to be linear and reproducible in the studied dose range. The trapping centers located between 0.83 eV and 1.07 eV were revealed for different heating rates in the TL study. The high TL sensitivity of CaSO4:Mn was proven when comparing with commercially available dosimeters. The luminescent signals exhibit a smaller fading than described in the literature for CaSO4:Mn produced by other methods.

Abstract: Naphthenic acid corrosion of steel was studied in a stagnant, biphasic oil/aqueous phase system, by means of electrochemical measurements and surface analysis. Corrosion was restricted to the region of the aqueous phase, as crater-shaped pits that eventually coalesced, generating a nearly uniform attack in the vicinity of the oil phase. In-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) reveals the processes occurring at the aqueous phase, which nevertheless increase with the fraction of oil phase and with degree of acidity of the oil.

Abstract: This study aims at expanding the knowledge on the applicability of bone meal powder (BMP), and assess its potential as an adsorbent material for methylene blue (MB) removal, a toxic textile dye. BMP is a low-cost material still little studied for the adsorption of contaminants in aqueous media. In this work, we employed the 2k experimental design (k = 3) to systematically explore the most important process parameters, which were pH of the MB solution, initial MB concentration in solution and biosorbent dosage (mass of biosorbent/volume of contaminated solutions).

Abstract: One of the most serious problems related to water pollution by the textile, plastics, leather and food industries, among others, is the emission of aqueous effluents containing dyes. The most commercially used dyes are resistant to biodegradation, photodegradation and the action of oxidizing agents. The presence of dyes in water bodies can significantly and adversely affect the photosynthesis of aquatic plants by reducing the penetration of sunlight. In addition, they can be toxic to certain forms of aquatic life. Treatment of aqueous effluents containing dyes can involve a variety of materials and techniques, of which adsorption stands out for its simplicity, low cost and efficiency. In this study, standard biochars derived from wheat straw (WSP), oil seed rape straw (OSR) and Miscanthus straw (MSP), obtained at two different pyrolytic temperatures (550 °C and 700 °C), were investigated as adsorptive materials for remazol black (RB) dye. Maximum adsorption capacities were obtained at a dosage of 5 g L-1 for most of the BCs, except for MSP550, for which the dosage of 10 g L-1 achieved the highest performance. pH effect indicated that most of the adsorptive functionalities of the BCs are favored at pH 5. The steps currently in progress refer to the experimental design for the optimization of adsorption parameters and will be added in the full paper.

Abstract: This work reports a study on two forms of persulfate activation (solar irradiation and anodic oxidation-AO) for the degradation of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). A solution containing a mixture of levonorgestrel and fluoxetine ([LNG]0 = 0.29 ± 0.03 mg L-1; [FLX]0 = 5.02 ± 0.34 mg L-1) was treated with persulfate ([PS]0 = 0.07 mol L-1) and irradiated or electrolyzed for 60 min under similar conditions. The results revealed similar decays of APIs in the two activation forms studied, solar/PS (k LNG = 6.6 × 10-2 min-1; k FLX = 7.7 × 10-2 min-1) and AO/PS (k LNG = 7.8 × 10-2 min-1; k FLX = 9.7 × 10-2 min-1), with slightly better results for the electrochemical process. However, acute toxicity accessed with Daphnia similis indicated that AO/PS provided a three-fold increase in the values of toxic units.

Abstract: The energy generated using thorium as nuclear fuel is an attractive way to preserve the uranium reserves and reduce the radiotoxicity wastes. Today, global thorium reserves are around four times that of uranium reserves, and ThO2 is cheaper than UO2. The next generation of reactor shows fast reactor types using (U-Pu)O2. It contains combinations of ceramic fuels based on UO2, PuO2, and ThO2. Using a new version of the FRAPCON code, get the ability to predict thorium fuels. The FRAPCON fuel codes permit the addition of capacity to simulate thorium fuel and compare fuel performance with standard UO2. The proposed strategy uses ThO2 75 wt% composed of UO2 25 wt% with enrichment equal to 19.5 wt%. In comparison, the second strategy uses a balanced composition of ThO2 at 93 wt.% combined with PuO2 at 7.0 wt.%.

Abstract: Today, many efforts focus on ceramic fuels that can replace standard uranium dioxide (UO2). In this context, uranium nitride (UN) could replace UO2 used in light water reactors (LWRs). The UN fuel has a higher uranium density and better thermal conductivity than UO2. The drawback of UN is a lower oxidation resistance in contact with the water. Regardless, adding a compound that acts as a protective barrier against nitride oxidation, such as ZrN, U3Si2, and UO2, could reduce water oxidation. Early, UO2–UN composites were fabricated by hot pressing UO2–UN powder mixtures within 1300 °C–1590 °C. The manufacturing process adopted for the fuel pellet fabrication changed to the spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. Using SPS can avoid the exceptional resistance to producing a perfect microstructure and the high costs associated with 15N enrichment. The composite fuel suggested is UN-10% U3Si5 verified with FRAPCON code.

Abstract: Uranium dioxide has been the most common ceramic fuel used to generate electric power in the last sixty years. The lower addition of chromic oxide (Cr2O3) shows the benefits of large grain size. Using (Cr2O3-Al2O3)-doped UO2 comprises improved mechanical response and fission gas retention properties. The addition of Cr2O3 to UO2 slightly affected its thermal properties as proposed for pressurized water reactors and boiling water reactor designs. Advanced doped pellet technology (ADOPT) can improve fuel cycle economics and accident tolerance. Today, doped fuel pellets exhibit several favorable characteristics: large grain size, increased density, minor fission gas release (FGR), and reduced pellet cladding interactions. In simulation are used FRAPCON to simulate doped fuel and ferritic alloy as cladding. Most of the material properties of the Cr2O3-doped UO2 were identical to those of the classic UO2.

Abstract: The usability of phantoms plays a critical role in commissioning and quality assurance programs in radiotherapy departments as they improve patient care setup with greater precision between personalized treatment planning and irradiation setup uncertainties. With the emergence of these new radiotherapy modalities, it became necessary to apply relatively small fields that are dynamic or static. The use of these field sizes can cause uncertainty in dosimetry, requiring special attention in small field dosimetry. TLDs have advantages for having characteristics such as high spatial resolution and dose response, offering a promising opportunity to measure the absorbed dose in a small field. As a result, we can conclude that the use of the 3D phantom with thermoluminescent dosimeters proved to be very useful in the application of small field dosimetry, enabling a more accurate investigation in quality controls involving treatments whose doses are relatively high in radiosurgery techniques that require more accurate and reliable measurements in dose delivery.

Análise do desempenho de ferramenta de corte de cerâmica texturizada a laser no torneamento do FC250 / Analysis of the performance of ceramic cutting tool texturized by laser in the FC250 turning. In: CONGRESSO NACIONAL DE ENGENHARIA MECÂNICA, 11., 7-11 de agosto, 2022, Teresina, PI. Anais...

Abstract: One of the major concerns that arose in recent years within the automotive industry has been making cars sustainable, safe and economic. One of the ways to solve this equation is to use lighter materials that reduce the weight of vehicles and increase the energy absorption mainly on the B-pillar. This paper aims to study the RSW cycle of the welding parameter known as P1. The parameter were defined to reach the maximum load during the tensile test according to the norm AWS D8.9. The test samples were assembled with a GAP to reproduce real vehicle welding conditions, and the parameter P1 weld 22MnB5 steel samples with heat treatment, known as Press Hardening Steel (PHS). The influence of these parameters on the PHS mechanical properties was evaluated with Vickers hardness test (HV), metallographic technique, conducting ultrasonic and tensile test. The results confirmed the difference at the Heat affected zone (HAZ) mechanical strength over fusion zone. It was possible to visualize a softening region in the HAZ and increasing to the weld point, which is demonstrated in the microstructural analysis and thus justifies the detachment of the weld button of the base material in tensile test. Keywords: PHS, HAZ, RSW.

Abstract: The hot pressing hardened steel known as “press hardened steel - PHS” is a steel of extreme importance for the automotive industry. The application of this type of steel in the structure of vehicles promotes the improvement of safety, mass reduction and lower fuel consumption. The increase in the use of this type of steel, culminated in the need to deepen knowledge about the joining processes, more specifically about the electrical resistance spot welding process - RSW, which is one of the most used processes in automotive structural construction. The aim of the present work was the evaluation of the autogenous spot weld of 22MnB5 steel hardened through heat treatment in laboratory scale, simulating the cooling rates used during the hot pressing, commonly used in the automotive industrial practice. Welds were made in two different conditions, with welding parameters in a single step (direct welding) and with parameters considering additional pre and post heating steps. Mechanically, the welds were evaluated through the standardized test called tension shear test. The results showed that, according to the American Welding Society - AWS standard, the performance of the welds meets the minimum requirements required for the group of materials in which 22MnB5 falls.
